Georgia Runoff campaigns

We need your help writing letters to Georgians for the January 5th runoff elections.

Join us in writing nearly 3 million letters to Georgia. We are writing to encourage Georgians to register to vote, request and return their absentee ballots, and turn out to vote for the January 5th runoff elections.

We will be writing three different types of letters. With a short timeline to get letters to Georgians, we are asking that you send most of your letters as soon as you write them — a rolling mail date.

Important: Three ways the Georgia Runoff campaigns are different from The Big Send

  • Focus: Based on consultations with organizations doing work on the ground in Georgia, we believe that it is critically important that our letters for these campaigns not focus on the national stakes. Please *do not *write about Mitch McConnell, "control of the Senate," etc. Georgia voters are making a choice about who will represent Georgia, and our messages should respect that.

  • Rolling mail dates: If you write voter registration letters or letters to encourage voters to request and return an absentee ballot, you should mail them as soon as possible. The only letters with a set mail date (like the letters we sent for The Big Send) are the Get Out the Vote letters, which should be mailed on December 7th.

  • Return address: The approach we’re taking for the return address is new and different from what we’ve done in the past. In the spot on the envelope where the return address would go, please write your first name and last initial on the first line, and "Vote Forward" on the second line. For example:
    Mandy P.

As in the past, our nonpartisan "Social" campaigns target voters who are members of traditionally underrepresented groups and who we think may be unlikely to vote and "Political" campaigns target voters who may be unlikely to vote and Democratic-leaning.

The letter templates for these campaigns were designed with the help of Vote Forward volunteers who live in Georgia. Many thanks to Amanda, Art, Christina, Coleen, Dahlia, Devra, Erin, Gerald, Julie, Karen, Manette, Martha, Michelle, Nicha, Peggy C., Peggy T., Stephen, Susan, Temme, and Tresha.

Review the following guidance before writing your letters

Please keep in mind that like all letters we write to potential voters, messages should be nonpartisan to have the highest possible impact:

  • Research shows that nonpartisan language is more effective than partisan messaging for "get out the vote" communications. When you add handwritten messages to your letter templates, do not mention candidates by name or political parties. This includes terms like "red" and "blue." For guidance, see our FAQ. Please note: Groups on the ground in Georgia have given us special guidance for the Georgia Runoff campaigns.

  • It's important not to assume that your letter recipients agree with you on issues, so stick with positive messaging that only encourages voting, not voting in a particular way.

  • Use the letter templates Vote Forward provides and prepare your letters as the instructions describe to keep the format consistent, which will ensure the integrity of our analyses of the impact of your letters.

  • Every letter sent to someone on a Vote Forward mailing list must include the voter's unique code, which is in the small print; these codes allow letter recipients to opt-out of future mailings.
