Host a letter writing event
Organizing your friends and family to write Vote Forward letters is a great way to strengthen our democracy.
Across the country, Vote Forward volunteers are “adopting” voters and writing letters to increase turnout in this year’s midterm elections. With so much at stake, sending letters to voters in key states is more important than ever. We’re so grateful to everyone who is working to make an impact this November!
While many of our letter writers enjoy writing solo during their spare time—while watching TV, while the kids are asleep, or even in between meetings—we also hear from volunteers hoping to make letter writing a communal, community building experience. That’s where letter writing events come in handy!
Since Vote Forward’s founding, volunteers have been getting together in homes, coffee shops, and community centers to write letters together. These folks have proven just how effective (and motivating!) writing together can be. That’s why this year, we want to help more volunteers to get together to write, and we’re making hosting letter writing parties even easier as we head into the final stretch before The Big Send on October 29.
Our step-by-step guide to hosting a letter writing party was created by the Vote Forward team to ensure you have everything you need to effectively engage your fellow letter writers. We also offer training specifically for event hosts, hold informal office hours to answer questions, and we’re always available at host@votefwd.org.
Here’s what two of our volunteers shared with us about hosting:
“We are close friends who want very much to contribute in a significant way to encourage people to vote to strengthen our democracy now and for the future. Beginning back in 2020 we reached out to family and friends and began organizing letter-writing parties complete with coffee, snacks and already downloaded and copied letters from our printers. In October 2020 we delivered about 5,000 letters to the Post Office and sent pictures of ourselves with boxes of all the prepared letters ready for mailing, to those who participated to make everyone feel like a successful team.”
“Just last month we began the same process for the all-important midterms and plan to host these parties at least monthly between now and the Big Send in October. The time spent together is both productive and social with like-minded people greeting each other and sharing information. As hosts and organizers of this effort, we feel like we’re doing something meaningful for our country, especially after reading the results of research about the documented effectiveness of Vote Forward letter-writing.”
